Will Robinson Joins Mike Cope Racing for Full TA2 Season in 2025

Clearwater, FL [February 19, 2025] - The Mike Cope Racing team is excited to welcome Will Robinson to the team for 2025! He will be contesting the entire season in the Pro Am class as a rookie in the Trans-Am TA2 series. Will is a great young talent that we are really excited to have under our tent this season. He will be driving the #51  Ivy Asset Group / Drive Stewart / Irlandes Tequila / Freebell Ford Mustang.

Will grew up in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and loves anything to do with being outside. “From skiing, to backcountry snowmobiling, and riding my dirt bike. I am blessed to have grown up in such a beautiful place where there are so many amazing things to do outside”, Will says. He is currently studying as a Marketing major at Stetson University in Deland, Florida.

As a ski racer, Will has always had a passion for going fast. He also spent a lot of time driving different vehicles on his grandparents’ farm that shaped his love for cars. Will had an interest in anything that went fast and his Dad actually shared a connection with Trans-Am Champion Chris Dyson.

“My dad is friends with Chris Dyson. Mr. Dyson suggested I try attending a Skip Barber racing school. After one lap in a Skip Barber Mustang at Lime Rock Park, I was hooked. I then got my SCCA competition racing license and moved into Spec Miata!”

Will has spent a few seasons racing in SCCA Spec Miata getting extensive amounts of wheel to wheel racing experience under his belt. “I’ve had so much fun being a part of that community. All of the Miata drivers and team members are some of my best friends and I’ve learned so much along the way.”

He moved up to Spec MX-5 in 2024 and finished the season with nine top 10s, five top 5’s, three podiums, and set the Spec MX-5 track record at Watkins Glen last June while also winning a number of Spec Miata races in SCCA and FARA. He was also selected to the first round of the Mazda Motorsports MX-5 cup shootout.

Moving into the 2025 season Will is excited to try his hand at racing in TA2. “Trans Am is a legendary series with a track record of having produced some of the best road and stock car racers. TA2 is a spec series with outstanding competition and it combines long format road racing with raw muscle cars without any driver aids. Ultimately, we picked TA2 for 2025 because we thought it would be the perfect place for me to continue to develop my road racing skills while getting more experience in a high horsepower tube frame car.”

We really enjoyed having Will out to our shop and can’t wait to start working with him more at the track!

“Mike and the Cope Racing team were highly recommended to us by some respected and very successful drivers. When we visited the shop and met members of the team, it was immediately obvious why MCR has had so much success. Not only are the people and the shop super impressive, MCR feels like a family.”

Will wants to soak in as much knowledge as he can this season. “As part of MCR, I will have the opportunity to be coached by Thomas Merrill, a TA2 series champion and incredible coach. In the short time I have had with Thomas thus far, he has already taught me a ton. Being around this much experience and knowledge that Thomas and the Mike Cope Racing team will definitely make me a better driver.”

He really wants to emphasize patience as he gets acclimated to a new car and series in 2025. “ I want to learn the TA2 car and hopefully get to the point where I can become consistently competitive in the series. I understand it is going to be a steep learning curve, so my goal is to learn and try to be patient with my development. Unfortunately, patience isn’t one of my strengths!”

As a student at Stetson University, Sebring has become Will’s home track. He has spent a lot of time racing Miatas there over the past few years and really enjoys the technical bumpy nature that Sebring offers. It will be the perfect track for him to make his debut start in the Trans-Am Series.

Will also has a big appreciation for all of the people that have helped him get to this stage of his career and he’s excited to make them all proud this weekend and throughout the season.

“All of my racing success to date is the result of amazing coaching and support from my family. I was very fortunate to meet Spencer Pumpelly, a highly accomplished IMSA driver, when I first began my career. Spencer has been an amazing coach and mentor to me. In addition, Todd Lamb and Nathan Saxon have been instrumental in my development as a Miata driver. Chad Pierce and Matthew Green have been amazing coaches for me in late model oval racing. I am now very lucky to have Thomas Merrill coach me in a TA2 car. Lastly, I am grateful for Mr. Chris Dyson as a mentor. If he hadn’t recommended Skip Barber to my dad, I wouldn’t be racing today.”

“I also have an amazing family including my brother, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins all who support my racing. My Mom is my biggest fan. I know my racing makes her really nervous so I really appreciate her letting me pursue my dream.”

We can’t wait to support Will’s efforts this year and watch him grow and develop alongside some of the most talented road course racers in the U.S.

The Sebring race weekend kicks off with two rounds of test sessions on Thursday, February 20th. Practice and Qualifying fill Friday’s schedule. The main event is set to take the green flag on Saturday, February 22nd at 12:15pm Eastern Time for 45 laps of TA2 racing.
